<International Circulation>: We know that omega-3 fatty acids have been around for about 30 years now. Can you tell us about some of the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment?

Prof. Davidson: Omega-3 fatty acids have many potential effects for reducing cardiovascular risk. What we are focusing our research on right now is on triglyceride lowering, a very important risk factor in countries like China, where triglycerides are getting a lot worse. We are also recognizing that omega-3 fatty acids have very important benefits in reducing platelet aggregation, thrombosis, and inflammation and, in animal models, are very anti-artherogenic. We think that omega-3 fatty acids provide a broad spectrum of potential benefits of reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease.
